This map and guide shows the geographical distribution of some of the most important visible ancient monuments of Great Britain. Ancient monuments date from the earliest time to about AD 1000, and archaeological periods within this time span are distinguished by the use of different symbols and colours on the map. The location of the monuments is highlighted by displaying archaeological details against a modern map base. An index to all sites is provided, with each monument named, given a National Grid reference number, and the relevant 1:50,000 Landranger sheet number so that sites may be exactly pinpointed. The map is printed with North and South Britain back to back and is complemented by an informative text, colour photographs of selected sites and a useful chronological table.

This map and guide is a partial revision of the Ordnance Survey map of Roman Britain published in 1978. It incorporates the advances which have been made in our knowledge of Roman military sites, roads, and place names since 1978, and the information is portrayed for the first time against a background of modern Britain. The map, which covers the whole of Great Britain, is printed with North and South Britain back to back and includes a comprehensive selection of sites, photographs, and a chronological table. An informative text describes the construction and layout of both Hadrian's Wall and the Antonine Wall, with a list of the best preserved parts to visit or view. The text also gives an insight into settlements, amphitheatres and temples, as well as industry and mining.
